Pictures from last night’s Le Freak

February 5th, 2010 by lastcall

Last night’s Le Freak night at Peacock Room started off a bit slow but definitely picked up around midnight, as illustrated in this photo to the left. The night, featured a mixture of dance, disco and Latin beats throughout the evening in the backroom of the Peacock. A video played on a screen, behind the DJs, of locals dancing and partying in different spots around Orlando.

When the disco was playing earlier in the evening I was on the dance floor for a bit with my friend Heather and one of the event’s organizers, Patrick Scott Barnes (fortunately no one was able to get a picture of that).  I even danced to “Le Freak” because, well, it was that kind of night. When the place started getting more packed after 11, that’s when the people brought on some of the freaky themselves (again as illustrated in the picture above) and added to the music backdrop of the night. Which actually started getting a bit manic as it got later, but people were definitely digging it.

Barnes, who shot all the photos, considers the night a success and plans on doing it again on March 20.

Go here to see more photos of the night, and if you haven’t gotten a chance yet, please check out Barnes’s collection of photos from Orlando nightlife over the years. They are the galleries at the bottom of his Facebook pictures page. He has a ton of images from early ’90s on. It will definitely make you nostalgic — I miss the Kit Kat Club!

Sanford Mardi Gras Pub Crawl tonight

February 5th, 2010 by lastcall

Looks like the last Sanford Pub Crawl was such a success, they’re having another one tonight. The theme is Mardi Gras of course and the party starts at 7 p.m.

The tickets are $15 and that includes two drinks at each stop which is a great deal! The first stop is Limoncello’s, from there the schedule is:

8 p.m.: The West End

9 p.m.: Little Fish Huge Pond

10 p.m.: The Steale Arm

11 p.m.: The Wire Blues Bar

Midnight: The Wet Spot ( I still say this is a horrible name for a bar!)

I hope the rain doesn’t spoil it. For those of you on the fence, look at it this way, you’ll be inside most of the time.

Firestone Live owner: Orlando cop accused of fondling woman was ‘potential problem’

February 5th, 2010 by lastcall

This has to be the grossest thing I’ve read in while, it’s the first paragraph in the story we ran about the cop that is accused of fondling a woman outside Firestone Live:

“An Orlando police officer arrested after a nursing woman said he fondled her breast and squeezed milk from it was considered “potential problem” because he would spend too much time talking with young women instead of working, according to court documents released Thursday.”

Disturbing!

Here’s the rest of the story…

Mount Dora Brewing and the Rocking Rabbit Brewery opens

February 4th, 2010 by lastcall

Yay, we have another local brewer opening shop in Central Florida!

Mount Dora Brewing opened at the Rocking Rabbit Brewery at 405 S. Highland Street in Mount Dora last weekend, and will be serving its own beer along with Orlando Brewing selections too.

The building the brewery is housed in has been in Mount Dora since the 1920s, most recently serving as a furniture restoration space which explains much of the old tools and collectibles that make up the decor.

Currently, the there are two beers from Mount Dora Brewing being served, one call “First Draft” which is an Irish Red Ale with a low alcohol content. It’s made of organic ingredients, including Orange Blossom honey and is unfiltered. The other beer is called “Second Draft” and is also an Irish Red Ale made with organic ingredients.  It’s also unfiltered and the Web site says that “its slightly cloudy appearance is due to incomplete flocculation.” And for those of you that don’t know what flocculation means, according to beertown.com it’s “the phenomenon by which yeast cells aggregate into masses toward the end of the fermentation process and sink to the bottom, thus contribution to the clarification of beer.”

Currently the brewery is open from 3 – 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 12:30 – 6 p.m. Sundays with the Saucy Spoon, an attached restaurant, open Friday and Saturday from 5 – 9 p.m. and 12:30 – 5 p.m. Sundays. Mondays the brewery does open for a bit starting at 7 p.m. during the Brewery Boys band practice.  Go to mountdorabrewing.com for more information.

Super specials for your Super Bowl Sunday

February 4th, 2010 by lastcall

Here is my column for tomorrow’s Calendar section, I’ll keep updating with additional events sent to me now through Sunday:

Super Bowl is this weekend, and even though I’m still bummed that the New York Jets won’t be there, I’ll still be watching and I know many of you will be too.

Because budgets are so top of mind this year, I figured I would dig up some all-inclusive parties happening around town. Like $30 all-you-can-eat-and-drink type deals that leave you knowing exactly how much you’re going to spend ahead of time, with only tip and taxi to worry about after the game. Here are a few for you to check out. Have fun and, if you’re anything like me, have a wonderful Monday off.

•I usually don’t focus too much on chains in these types of roundups, but the Miller’s Ale Houses around Central Florida are offering a great deal on Sunday. For $50 it’s all you can eat and drink from 5 p.m. until the game ends. The buffet will include ribs, a raw bar, a carving station and more. Plus it’s open bar with only pitchers and shots not included. There are a ton of Miller’s Ale Houses around town, so go to millersalehouse.com and find your closest location for more information.

•The next bar is one I’ve frequented a few times with my New England Patriots-loving sister and brother-in-law. Flanagan’s in Altamonte Springs is offering all-you-can-drink domestic bottles and drafts and mixed drinks (no shots) plus a ribs and pulled pork buffet for $35 for the duration of the game (starts at 6 p.m.). They also are giving away a TV during halftime (last year it was a 48″ LCD). It obviously won’t be the hotbed of Patriots fans it normally is, but it’s a great little bar and should pull in a fun crowd. The owners suggest you stop by before Sunday to reserve a table. Flanagan’s is at 924 W. SR 436; call 407-869-1801.

•If you’re looking to party in downtown Orlando, the new Piper’s Downtown will have a $40 all-you-can-eat-and-drink special running that includes open bar minus top shelf. The menu is still being worked out for the buffet, but wings will definitley be on there. There are two big screens and 14 other flat screens through the bar in The Plaza. The specials will start an hour before kick-off and run through the end of the game. Piper’s is at 177 S. Orange Ave. in downtown Orlando; call 407-404-6484.

•On the Lake Mary side of town, Carlos’n Charlie’s at 951 Promenade Ave. is going to have what sounds like an awesome buffet. For $40 there will be all-you-can-eat wings, ribs, nacho bar with homemade queso, fajita bar, soups and desserts along with all-you-can-drink Miller Lite and Coors Light. The game will be shown on a 100-inch screen along with seven other flatscreens throughout the bar. Prizes will be given out during breaks. Call 407-333-3482.

•If wings are your thing, Ain’t Misbehavin’ at 1550 SR 436 in Winter Park will have all you can eat wings throughout the game. For $30 in advance and $50 at the door, the all-inclusive deal also includes open bar from 6 p.m. until the end of the game. Make sure you buy your tickets ahead of time by stopping by the bar or calling them at 407-672-0368.

The Pour House in Metrowest will be offering an all-you-can-eat-buffet with prime rib, barbecue chicken and ribs, sandwiches, wings and all-you-can-drink beer, wine and liquor for $50. There will also be over $300 worth of prizes presented by ESPN Radio and other prizes raffled off that include tickets to see Snoop Dogg, Bob Saget, the Orlando Magic and the Orlando Titans. The Pour House is at 2461 S. Hiawassee Road in Orlando; call 407-295-9999.

Pardi Gras 2010

February 3rd, 2010 by lastcall

Not quite Mardi Gras, Pardi Gras is downtown Orlando’s answer to New Orleans’ annual celebration. On Fat Tuesday, otherwise known as Feb. 16, there will be a couple of celebrations.

One is courtesy of the folks at Wall Street Plaza, who will be serving up New Orleans-style hurricanes and crawfish to everyone who comes out. Of course there will be beads, and live music by the The Burnin’ Smyrnans. The party starts at 5 p.m. for a 21-and-up crowd and it’s $5 at the gate to get in. Wall Street Plaza is at 25 Wall St.

The other celebration will be at the Cajun-influenced Crooked Bayou in downtown Orlando. There also will be a $5 cover and a free crawfish happy hour from 5 p.m. until they’re gone. The party will feature live music by Shak Nasti, Meters Tribute, Errol Windham Zydeco Band featuring Jarritt Sheel on trumpet and DJs Nigel, Mike Ryan and Andrew Spear. Crooked Bayou is at 50 E. Central Blvd.; call 407-839-5852.

The Hideaway goes full-liquor

February 3rd, 2010 by lastcall

When I’m looking for a good burger — one that’s the best in town, in my opinion — and a cold beer for a decent price while watching the game, I usually find myself gravitating toward The Hideaway Bar at 516 Virginia Drive in Orlando. The Miami Dolphins-themed bar now provides another reason to stop by — they just went full liquor last week. Hopefully their liquor prices will be as good as the rest of their prices. If you’re planning on watching the Super Bowl there this Sunday, there will be specials, the bartender tells me, on Rum Runners and 7&7s, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

The two he shared with me come from New York mixologist Kevin Patricio. Heres also shared recipes and pictures so you can recreate the cocktails at home during the Super Bowl if you want.

Two popular reunions for ’90s nightlife faves

February 1st, 2010 by lastcall

PX00139_9If you lived in Orlando and went to dance clubs in the early to mid ’90s, there is a good chance you went to Visage or Firestone at least once. Yes, Firestone, now Firestone Live, still exists in downtown Orlando. But during its rave heydays it was nationally known, even mentioned by Rolling Stone as one of the best nightclubs in the southeast. That was back when a club could be open all night long in downtown Orlando versus the 2 or 3 a.m. closing times we see these days.

But on March 6, Firestone Live will be hosting a night they hope will bring back that  feel (although the closing times will remain the same).  “The Official Firestone Reunion” will feature the original resident DJs Robby Clark and D-Xtreme with support by Andy Hughes and Sandy. Others include Remark, Knightlife, Cliff Tangredi, Daisy, AK1200, Kyngnova, Stylus and Security. The club requests you bring old flyers to post at the club.

Tickets are $12 in advance and can be purchased at The Drop Shop. General admission is $15 from 10 – 11 p.m. and $20 after 11 p.m., the show is 18-and-over and will start at 10 p.m. For more information go to firestonelive.net.

Now for the Visage fans out there, the club that was located on North Orange Blossom Trail from the ’80s-’90s was a favorite of mine in high school and college. I know many of you that loved it as much as I did and will be happy to hear there will be a Visage reunion happening on April 24 at Lyrica at 22 S. Magnolia Ave. Lyrica is actually the old Cairo club, the venture the Visage folks closed shop for when they came to downtown Orlando. They called it Renaissance but later it was named Cairo.

The party will feature original DJ Paul Vaine, and unlike the old days no teenagers allowed. Over 21 only please. That’s fine by me, it’s been a while since I had to sneak a couple of sips of a “Sex On The Beach” in the bathroom. The cover is $5 and doors open at 9 p.m., visit their Facebook page to find out more.

***UPDATE***

The Visage reunion is actually 18-and-up.

HUE’s new patio specials includes $2 champagne

January 30th, 2010 by lastcall

I wonder if the folks at HUE, in Thornton Park, saw my reference to them in yesterday’s column and started these specials in response? Alas, I don’t think I have that kind of pull. Regardless of reason, I’m glad they’re doing it. A glass of champagne for $2! I’m so there! As long as it’s not the cheap swill my husband bought us a bottle of on New Year’s Eve (not at HUE, from a supermarket) — my head still hurts from that stuff. Here’s their press release on their new patio specials starting this Monday:

“Starting Monday, February 1st HUE Restaurant will be kicking off our weekly HUE PATIO Specials.  Monday – $5 cosmos and $10 off select bottles of wine, Tuesday – $2 domestic bottled beers and 25% off flatbreads, Wednesday – $5 house wine and 25% off  HUE Trio and featured chef’s appetizers, Thursday – $2 champagne and 25% off crispy oysters and calamari, Friday – $5 martinis.  Come enjoy the great weather and join us on the patio!”
